Introduction
Hitchhiking, for those who don’t know, is when you travel somewhere by getting a free lift from a passing vehicle. As perilous and bizarre as it may be, in the past, it was very popular. Although, it may be excused if you are stranded in the middle of nowhere and of course also if you’re teleporting away. Away into the galaxy that it! This, as you’ve already guessed, is exactly the situation, Arthur Dent(an Earthman) experiences. And I promise Douglas Adams has a string of surprises ready for you!
Story
On an ordinary Thursday morning, Arthur Dent(your average British Citizen) endures life leisurely until he observes a bulldozer outside his house. Terrifyingly, he walks out and grasps that his house is being demolished to make way for a new bypass. Momentarily, Ford Prefect(an alien who’s been stranded on Earth for 15 years and who’s also a friend of Arthur) arrives and conveys that the Earth is going to be destroyed in a few moments. This alarms Arthur who’s had a distressing morning and is still trying to recover from the fact that his house is being demolished. Ford convinces Arthur for a drink and both of them go to a nearby pub for the last time on Earth. Whilst their time diminishes, Arthur and Ford successfully hitchhike into a spaceship and their space adventures commence… whilst the Earth is destroyed.
For spoiler purposes, I am going to allow you to explore the rest of the story yourself – it’s an incredible read. Find out how the universe is, without the Earth!
About the Author
Since a young age at school when he achieved a full score in an essay, Douglas Adams saw a career in writing. He was a meritorious schoolboy, a studious Cambridge student and worked for various jobs to generate money for all of his educational loans. Though he worked up to a writing career, he never saw success in the early stages. His efforts continued for a long time and then his peaks were reached at the time of the publication of ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’. His vision of the future(at the time of the publication) depicts some of the wonders today and many innovative ideas are expressed throughout the book.
My Thoughts
If there is such a thing as a ‘necessary book’, this one hits the nail on the head! The plot and development of the story from the perspective of an ordinary Earthman is presented extraordinarily and the use of characters is very imaginative. Initially, I felt a slight drag into the story however, after a few chapters I was instantly captivated. I recommend this book for anyone who’s interested in action and adventure genres and for any ages(it’s especially exciting for under 13’s). I hope that you explore the incredible cosmos in all its chaos with Douglas Adams in ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’.
