Doesn’t it just fascinate you to think about how your brain works? Well, it sure does to me. It’s a structure stretching 15 centimetres in length yet has the capability to handle over 100 billion operations per second using the vast supply of neurones. But what difference would it make by having left or right-side dominant brain?
Disclaimer: I am giving my opinion and what perspective I see therefore, this blog is a more general viewpoint.
100 billion operations per second!
Yes! You heard me right, 100 billion operations per second. Unconsciously, the brain is having to make countless processes as neurones are transmitted across synapses. The brain can store up to a range of 1 terabyte – 2.5 petabytes. It’s astounding considering it only weighs up to 1.4kg on average.
Is it true that a human being uses only 10% of their brain?
There have been many disputes between scientists and the public mentioning how much of the brain a human being uses. But, most scientists believe that we humans don’t only use 10% of our brain and that its a pure myth. This is because, if you catch some sort of disease to the other 90% of your brain it essentially means it wouldn’t have any effect. Thus this statement is inaccurate according to scientists, hence they find that 100% of the brain functions at all time.
Humans or computer – Which is more powerful?
Both humans and computers have evolved. More significantly, the computer has evolved much faster in the past decade compared to the human brain which has evolved more gradually. However, comparing the brain with one of the world’s most powerful computer (called ‘K’ in Japan) really sets borders for our brains. Did you know the ‘K’ supercomputer is incredibly massive it takes up the size of almost two tennis courts? Although this supercomputer uses up over 10 megawatts whereas, the human brain… well, uses up effectively nothing, it still happens to be more powerful and has many more functions. Alternatively, the brain and supercomputers are very different. The brain goes through many, random and unpredictable processes whilst supercomputers are more organised and follow multiple algorithms. In my opinion, computers are more powerful than human brains.
So, are you a left or right-sided thinker?
Firstly, what is the difference? If your mind is moreright-side dominant then it’s more likely that you are talented in creative activity whereas, left-brain thinkers have strong math and logic skills. Generally, depending on the individual’s experiences the brain adapts and either becomes logical and analytic(left) or thoughtful and intuitive(right). Interestingly, the left hemisphere of the brain controls the right-sided muscles and the right hemisphere controls the left, meaning if you damage the left hemisphere of your brain the right side of your body gets affected. One way to understand whether you’re left or right-sided thinker is with this picture:
However, research has proven that even this theory of the left and right side of the brain is incorrect. The truth is people use their entire brain but just various parts for various activities. For example, you typically use the right side when paying attention but the left in language. Many scientists are now looking at how the human brain has evolved and how the brain operates in various situations.
The brain is insane. With millions and millions of neurons stretching across 15 centimetres of pure tissue, the brain becomes truly tremendous. There is so much more we can discover about this magnificent machine. There are billions of different people with different thoughts but all have the same thing in common – a brain. So, do you believe that there is a left and right side of thinking in the brain?
