A lot of us have been eagerly waiting for Apple to announce their next iPhone. On September 12th 2017, in the Apple event at the brand-new Steve Jobs Theatre, iPhone X was announced and this blog-post will help you decide which phone suits your preferences.

Note that this blog has no biased opinion on the deciding factor.

iPhone X

Company – Apple Inc.

Galaxy S8

Release Date – April 21st 2017

Company – Samsung Co.

Materials

The iPhone X has a stainless steel band around it which is unheard of with the addition of the toughest glass display ever on a smartphone as they claimed. From initial impressions, iPhone X seems more strong and durable than it is rumoured publically.

The galaxy S8 has an aluminium band and a gorilla glass 5 material which has been tested and proves that 80% of impacts, it will survive a 5 feet drop.

Resistance

The iPhone X offers ip67 water resistant protection which enables it to stay 3ft underwater for 30 minutes and survive. Additionally, Apple includes splash and dust resistant features with this phone.

The Galaxy S8 offers a leading ip68 water resistant protection which edges to victory over the iPhone as it can stay 5ft underwater for 30 minutes and survive. Additionally, the S8 features the dust resistance too.

Display

Apple’s aspect ratio is 16:9 compared to Samsung Galaxy’s 18:5:9 which are both similar though they read differently. The iPhone X has a 5.8 inches diagonal height which fits so comfortably and satisfyingly; the Galaxy S8 has 5.8 and 6.2 inches models for your choice with a slightly different feeling when held by your hand but still provides an edgy-feeling.

The iPhone X has a 2436×1125-pixel resolution at 458 ppi and an insufficient brightness of 625 nits which still looks stunning as Apple have moved to OLED technology now. The Galaxy S8 offers a 2960 x 1440-pixel resolution at 570ppi and a brightness of over 1000 nits which means that, the S8 can give you sharper images, although more pixels means more battery power consumption.

Apple decided to hook on the notch at the top of the new iPhone which may seem provoking due to it blocking the screen however, it blends in beautifully with the OLED screen and I guess you just have to ignore it. Discluding that, the rest of the phone is bezel-less. Samsung have made the edges look bezel-less although, at the top and bottom of the screen there is still some bezel.

Apple supports HDR alongside Samsung but Apple includes Dolby Vision. The heroic advantage is that Apple uses the True Tone display which balances white colour to suit the environment and yeilds the comfort to your eyes with their simple yet homely displays.

Lastly, Apple have had and still maintain the all screen 3D touch feature for many shortcuts and simpe accesses that Samsung unfortunately doesn’t qualify.

If you’re looking for a range of brightness then Samsung will sympathise you however, if you’re content with a typical brightness but want the best display then Apple will surely satisfy you.

Cameras

When it comes to cameras, you want to keep each and every moment everlasting as a memory. iPhone has exceedingly advantageous features in their new hero…

The iPhone X has f/1.8 and f/2.4 aperture lens(wide and telephoto respectively) both at 12MP and both with dual camera sensors and dual OIS(Optical Image Stabalization).

The Galaxy S8 offers 12MP with dual camera sensors and dual Optical Image Stabalization with f/1.7 and f/2.4 aperture lens, meaning it can allow more light in the picture than iPhone.

Apple have cleverly managed to include some built-in features to overcome trouble and take the victory: The new portrait lighting allows to adjust the lighting of the picture while in photography or editing, the true tone flash gives 2x better uniformity of light, the videos can be shot with 4K at 60fps meanwhile the S8 can only do 4K at 30fps lastly, the iPhone can do 1080p at 240fps for astonishing slow motion videos too.

We can’t wait to see the camera comparison though it’s yet to be examined; I am assuming a close tie!

Biometrics

Apple have got rid of their old Touch ID and replaced it with a better and safer Face ID which can be used for unlocking your phone, Apple Pay or any other online payment procedures. They have developed a new emoji system called Animoji which can facially track you and create animated emojis for enjoying an animated discussion with your contacts.

The Galaxy S8 provides the touch ID for fingerprint unlock and also includes Iris Scanning for unlocking too. Now, the question arises on which of he two facial recognitions are better. It is Apple, which ultimately provides a more secure and cheat preventing face detection feature than Samsung.

iPhone clearly leads the Galaxy S8 with some new and unique biometric features; it’s for you to decide which phone favours you in this aspect.

Tech Specs

The battery life favours the iPhone X as it takes the lead by almost 2 hours over the Galaxy to last approximately 9hr 40min. Edged out of the game, the S8 lasts for 8hr which leaves you to settle your decision.

Apple has decided to start with wireless charging through Qi on the iPhone X which also supports fast charging that is more swift than the S8. Both these features were included earlier on with the S8 however, Apple’s new hero has excelled Samsung.

The iPhone X was rumoured and leaked through the code to have 3GB RAM. Meanwhile, the S8 includes a defeating 4GB RAM however, when tested, the iPhone X won comfortably in a speed test which makes it seem “not 3GB RAM!” Speed-oriented, the iPhone X is faster than it is digitally revealed to be…

As far as the CPU’S are considered, the iPhone X has a new A11 processor and M11 motion-coprocessor. Until the phone actually ships, there’s no way to tell for sure how that compares against the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or Samsung Exynos 8895 processor found in the Galaxy S8.

Both phones come in 64GB and 256GB storage models however, the S8 is expandable though you may not require it. Additionally, you can insert a memory card in the S8 which is not possible with the iPhone X.

The iPhone X is continuing to ignore the headphone port which Samsung triumph in as they haven’t stopped including them yet. This doesn’t mean for you to panic as they are continuing to include the lightning to headphone adapter. Apple is dominant with audio though, due to its Stereo technology which remains a leader.

Software OS

This is where you are entitled to your own decision as it completely depends on whether you’re an IOS fan or an Android Fan.

The new IOS 11 is packed with many new awesome features, is highly secured, is more private and is faster than Samsung’s Anroid 7.0. Not to critisize that Android is bad as it enables you to do more third-party downloads and customizable features; IOS is a better platform in my opinion and ultimately, it is your feeling whether you want to have IOS or Android; it isn’t a comparison.

And let’s face it. The iPhone X will update to the next version of iOS much more frequently. For the Samsung phone, you’ve no idea when Oreo is going to land.

Price

This is one factor that Apple has took a leap on along with all the other advantageous features; the 64GB iPhone X will be priced at the cost of $999/£999 along with the 256GB model which is a dear $1,149/£1,149. The Galaxy S8 is priced more reasonably at the cost of $725/£639.

This factor may limit you with your choice but I recommend taking time with your decision as both of the phones compete very robustly.
