Anticipate, don’t react…

,

Last Sunday, whilst playing badminton, my partner told me these words. Immediately it stuck with me. In any sport, we try to be ahead of the game. Keep reminding yourself of these words.

Obviously, agility, flexibility, fitness and energy all come into play when you react to a ball coming in your way, for instance. The better your physical status, the less demand for your body to react. However, tactical gameplay is important. With anticipation, you save the time and bury the latency to get ahead of the game.

With the same example used previously, in the game of badminton, it’s effortless for someone to smash the shuttlecock when you chip it for them. You hit it up, they smash it, you have a late reaction and then it becomes a challenge. Kill the challenge. Anticipate what you think you will witness and then play accordingly. Before they smash it, you have the power to predict! Again, skip ahead of the queue.

Real Life Examples

In the real world, anticipation plays a big role in trading(I have no relation with this topic whatsoever). There are many blogs out there for that already. More importantly, anticipation is like a superpower. When you create opportunities for yourself, pre-active becomes more influential than proactive. Prepare yourself for the future and predict changes and strive to create opportunities with an anticipatory mindset.

Some examples of where anticipation can be turned into an opportunity:

  • Predicting future technologies ie 5G and cloud storage
  • Anticipating your exam questions
  • Pre-actively preparing for hard times and turning them from a challenge to an opportunity

There are many situations where a pro-active status may come in handy. The world is changing every moment and advancing like lightning. There is still an infinite space to create opportunities so, anticipate changes, don’t react to them. Advance with the world and the catching-up business becomes less of a strive.
